Yoga Transformation for the Bridezilla

Posted on August 6th, 2014 by Liz Mahlich

May of 2006, on top of the Grand Canyon, Benji, asked me to marry him. Thinking back, it was quite brave of him to propose on the edge of a large canyon. Not sure if he was shaking because he was nervous I would say no, or if he thought I would push him off the cliff! In all seriousness, it was one of the most magical days of my life. I actually don’t remember what he even said to me as he pulled out the ring and went down on one knee, my heart was beating so fast I could barely hear anything! Of course I said yes, and we spent the next few days together enjoying the feeling of being newly engaged.

Engagement Ring Grand Caynon  Engagement 2

Flash forward a few months and I had gone from the sweet girl who was relaxed and in love to a Bridezilla!  How did this happen? My fiancé wondered where that girl whom he proposed to was! (I bet he was wishing we were on the cliff so he could push ME off!)

Why do we do this to ourselves ladies?  We put so much stress into planning our wedding day that we completely forget how to live in the moment and enjoy being engaged.  If I would have only discovered yoga a few years earlier, I may have been able to kill the bridezilla!

It wasn’t until after I was married that I really got into yoga. I always thought of it as a bunch of skinny flexible girls showing off with splits and handstands. Oh, was I wrong. I had taken a few yoga classes here and there, but didn’t start going regularly until I walked into Shanti School of Yoga in Traverse City, Michigan. By that time, I had two kids and life was a bit stressful. I felt overwhelmed with planning doctors appointment, playdates, cleaning house, and all the fun things on the Mommy To-Do list. I wasn’t really enjoying my life or living in the moment. Kelly Stiglich, one of the studio’s owners, was my first yoga instructor at Shanti. She opened my eyes to the beauty of yoga and taught me that it isn’t just a physical practice, but also a mental and spiritual practice.

After being a member at Shanti for two years, I’ve grown so much in such a short time. The biggest lesson I’ve learned is to slow down, relax and appreciate the life we are blessed with. So easy to say, so challenging to do.  I highly recommend yoga to everyone, especially a stressed out bride! You may feel like you don’t have time for yoga, but what you will realize is that yoga doesn’t take time, it actually gives time. It teaches you how to stay in the moment and take care of yourself so you can be the best person you can be for yourself, and for those you love.

At the end of the day, my wedding turned out lovely and we had the time our lives. I just wish I would have enjoyed each and every moment of being an engaged couple rather than being so stressed about the process to become a married one. In the big picture of life, being engaged is such a small window of time, but I think it is a truly important time in a relationship. My advice to all brides, enjoy the wedding planning process and enjoy your time with your fiancé before he becomes your husband. Life is full of planning and hustling around. Enjoy life and live in the moment.

How to Avoid the Top 5 Outdoor Wedding Disasters

Posted on July 30th by Liz Mahlich

Planning a wedding takes a lot of time and attention to detail. Planning an outdoor wedding adds a few more factors that need to be considered. Most of these factors revolve around good ol’ Mother Nature. With our outdoor wedding venue being in Northern Michigan, we know that variable temperatures, wind, rain, and bugs can really throw in some extra obstacles. Here are a few tips to help avoid disasters at your outdoor wedding.

1. Fly Away Seating Cards…

The classic tented place cards are such a simple way to go for assigned seating at a reception.  Just set cards out in alphabetical order on a table, guests come along, find their name, and off to their table they go. For an indoor reception, no problem. Outside, well, just a little gust of wind, and these babies go flying! Next thing you know, everyone is running around, mainly myself…the wedding coordinator, trying to catch these fly aways! Then trying to put them back in alphabetical order is a challenge. If any get lost, then it is a scramble to figure out who sits where. Best bet is to avoid these altogether. Thanks to Pinterest, there are many creative alternatives.  A very popular solution is to attach the place card to the guests’ wedding favor.  My personal favorite is to have the seating chart written on a board or sign, where people can come up to find their placement. This takes up less room and seems to be less confusing. Either way, just avoid anything that can fly off into the sunset! We will leave that for the bride and groom.

2. Rain Rain Go Away!

Rain…the four letter word of outdoor weddings. Some say it is good luck if it rains on your wedding day. As one of our most recent brides said “That is a bunch of crap that someone made up to make brides feel better!” Well we agree. No one wants rain on their wedding day. It is always good to be prepared, just incase. If your venue doesn’t have a building as a backup option, make sure you at least have a structure that can be closed in some how. For example, our wedding tent has sides, with Vienna Windows, to surround the entire tent incase of rain. The windows are a nice feature to ensure your guests don’t feel closed in.  Another important note with rain is to have a concrete floor. Our tent is situated on a concrete slab. Even though you do have to walk outside the tent to go to the bathroom building, the building is only a few feet away, and there is a concrete walkway the entire way. The alternative is soggy grass and mud puddles. Last thing you want on your wedding day is you heels sinking into the mud!

3. Bug off!

Bugs can sometimes cause a problem for outdoor events. One way they might gross out guests, is by landing on any food that is sitting out for awhile, such as appetizers. One way to avoid this is to ask your caterer if they plan ahead for this issue and keep food covered. Another bug that causes problems is mosquitos. In Northern Michigan, we are pretty lucky to not have too many of these. However, this year they seem to be bad. It is always a good idea to have a basket full of bug spray available at the reception for your guests. Another tip at keeping the bugs away from your reception is to avoid using fruit as a decoration. We had a rustic reception at our venue, which used peaches as part of the centerpiece. So beautiful and unique, however, this wasn’t the best situation. Bees and fruit flies were all over the place! Guest tables at your reception is the last place you want to see bees hanging out!

4.Wet Linens and Broken Vases…

Again, the wind issue. Not always a problem, but some areas are more susceptible than others. Our particular venue is on top of a hill at our golf course, so we can get some good gust of wind through. Any tall vases, or even medium sized vases that are lightweight, can easily fall over, leading to wet table linens and demolished centerpiece. If you choose to have tall or light weight vases, making sure to weigh them down with rocks is always a good idea.

5. Bridesmaid on Fire!

Wish lanterns are all the rage. Such a wonderful way to send off the wedding party! Wait…drunk people with fire? Lets just say I may have had to save a bridesmaid or two from being caught on fire from one of these lanterns! Drinking and fire aren’t the best combination.

How to Get Perfect Skin for Your Wedding Day

Posted by Liz Mahlich on July 8, 2014

Envision yourself walking down the aisle, seeing your future husband waiting for you at the end. You are a stunning bride…beautiful white dress…curly flowing hair…but wait…what is that? A HUGE ZIT ON YOUR NOSE?!! Then you wake up! Whew, thank goodness THAT was a dream.

There is a lot of work that goes into planning a wedding and the extra stress can cause some unwanted zits and skin that we may not even recognize.  Or maybe your once flawless skin may even have experienced sun damage, wrinkles or is dry and flakey? Whatever the issue, you want to look, and FEEL your best on your wedding day without having to cover your beautiful skin with layers of makeup.

I was a very lucky bride and had flawless skin. Somehow I missed out on all the teenager acne, and by age 24, when I walked down the aisle, my skin was flawless.  Flash forward 8 years later and I had a whole different situation going on. In February, I noticed a small cluster of irritated skin on my chin, which I figured was a little rash or zits that would go away within a few days. Well I was very wrong and it grew and grew until I basically had a goatee of rash. It was a little itchy, red, irritated, dry and above all UGLY! My rash was very frustrating because I couldn’t even cover it up with makeup. It started spreading around my eyes and on my eyelids.  It was taking over!!

I wanted to avoid going to a dermatologist so I did the old self diagnosis via the internet. I stumbled across many articles and blog posts about Perioral Dermatitis and realized that was exactly what I had. It is something that women in their 20s, 30s and 40s can develop for no good reason and there is no real treatment available. Being a very holistic person, I hate using chemicals when I don’t have to, so I tried every natural remedy imageable. Jojoba oil, apple cider vinegar soaks, coconut oil, healing salves and nothing worked. Sometimes it would get a little better, but the rash would ultimately come back with a vengeance.

By April, I was getting pretty fed up. In the meantime, a wonderful friend of mine, Rachel, had recently started posting information about Rodan and Fields on her facebook page. I thought it was something she had just learned about and wanted to share, but then I found out she had just become a consultant for the company. I was excited for her new business adventure and couldn’t wait to hear all about it.  At first, I didn’t considered this product for myself, because it is an over-the-counter medicine, rather than the all natural and organic products I typically use. I also thought is was more of a wrinkle cream, and didn’t think it would help with any skin rashes, similar to what I was experiencing.

Much to my surprise, Rachel found a regimen that would work for me called Soothe. This kit comes with a cleanser, toner, moisturizer and sunscreen and is meant to help people with dry irritated skin. Rodan and Fields doesn’t guarantee to cure such issues as mine, but it has been found to help people with any dermatitis, eczema, rosacea, and psoriasis.  In the beginning I was a little skeptical and didn’t want to spend the money to find out it wouldn’t work.  But I figured with the 60 day money back guarantee, why not give it a try.

The package came a few days after I placed my order and I was so excited to get started. I started the product the first week of May and right away I could tell my face was more moisturized.  It was still pretty damaged, red and bumpy but I kept up with the regimen every morning and night. Over the next few weeks, I felt like my skin was improving.   I looked back at my photo from before I started, and I could tell I had made progress. It was a slow process but I kept using the product and by the end of May, I looked at myself in the mirror and realized it was almost gone! My skin was almost back to normal!  For only a month of usage, I’m truly impressed. It’s now the beginning of July, and my rash has not returned, and my skin continues to be moisturized and I have a nice glow!

Meet our Events Manager: Jamie Keillor

Posted on June 30, 2014 by Jamie Keillor

Growing up in Michigan’s beautiful Upper Peninsula, I always dreamed of what else was out there.  From an early age, my parents instilled in me values of hard work, determination, and dedication to whatever I committed to.  Quitting was never an option in my family and I have always been grateful for the work ethic and values that my parents gave me.

I am the oldest of two girls, and I am so grateful for my sister Carrie, who continues to amaze me every day.    She is five years younger than me, but age and distance never seem to affect the bond that we share.  We grew up in the country surrounded by grandparents on one side and cousins on the other.  We spent endless days playing in the woods, sandpit, and exploring all that Mother Nature surrounded us with.  Our clothes never matched and we seldom wore shoes (dirt and sand are much easier to play in without them), but we truly didn’t care.  Playing sports was always something that kept us busy and gave us an opportunity to grow as individuals.

Carrie and Jamie

After high school, I attended Bay De Noc Community College for one year before transferring to Ferris State University.  I intended on a Pharmacy degree, but as with most college students, changed my major after my 2nd year and graduated in 2001 with a degree in Chemistry/Biology Secondary Education.  While at Ferris, I met my husband, Justin, who was in the Professional Golf Management program.

After graduation, we both decided that we wanted to see what else was out there.  As a golf professional, we both knew that a warmer climate would be better for his career and I was just ready for an adventure.  After much deliberation, we settled on Ft. Myers, FL where Justin’s grandpa spent his winters.  Shortly thereafter, I got a teaching job at a Barron Collier High School in Naples, Florida and we finally settled there.  Naples living was wonderful and we enjoyed the sun, beach, and golf.  It was a welcomed change for 2 kids raised in cold Michigan winters.  I changed careers after a couple years of teaching and got my Real Estate License, where I very much enjoyed the hustle and bustle of selling beautiful homes in Southwest Florida.

Our son was born in 2005 and soon the distance from grandparents and family began to wear on us.  We decided in 2007 to make the move back to Michigan to raise our family and to take over the family golf course, Crystal Lake Golf Club.  It was a bittersweet move for us.  Although we were excited to be closer to family and our roots, we were not looking forward to long Michigan winters!!   Our first summer was glorious and everything we had imagined.  I took on an administrative role at the golf course and became the Office Manager.  Justin, the Head Golf Professional, enjoyed being “home”, at the golf course that his Dad had ran for years and that Justin had grown up on.  We both stayed extremely busy and didn’t even get a chance to come up for air.  The first winter was beyond cold and seemed to last for an eternity!!  We definitely couldn’t have prepared ourselves for winter after spending 6 wonderful years in Naples!! Our daughter, Madeleine, was born in February 2008.   We geared up for our second season, then our third.  They say that time seems to fly when you’re having fun.  I guess that means that we are always having a blast!!

In 2009 Justin and I took on major renovations at the golf course.  We built the wedding site, renovated greens, and added bunkers.  It was a busy time but one that we definitely embraced.  It was at that time that I became the Events Manager and began the life of everything weddings!!!  I truly enjoyed this aspect of the golf course and it gave me an opportunity to be creative, organized, and make people happy.  Fast forward to 2014 and we have one more daughter, Gisele (who is truly a fireball) and I have become the sole operator of the golf course and Crystal Lake weddings.  My husband is a financial advisor and I am the crazy busy mom of three and still doing whatever I can to make people happy!!  The weddings are therapeutic for me as they are the only outlet I have for my creativity.  It truly becomes my happy place to transform our white tent into a magical dream for brides.

I am so grateful every day for my parents and the values that they have instilled in me.  I’m thankful for my faith, my husband, and my kids and for all the things that have transformed me into the person that I am today.  Crystal Lake Golf Club is very near and dear to my heart.  Each and every time I look out on the wedding site, the view down the 9th fairway, and the sunsets, I am reminded of all the people that have stood at that very spot and began the next chapter in their lives.  There are so many beautiful memories there and I am humbled that I get to be a part of making those dreams become beautiful memories.

Real Northern Michigan Wedding

Kendra & Andy August 25th, 2012

Posted by Liz Mahlich on June 5, 2014

Growing up, Andy Horton spent many summers in Northern Michigan at his family’s cottage on Crystal Lake. As soon as he met Kendra, he knew he had to share this gorgeous getaway with the girl of his dreams.  Once Kendra laid eyes on Crystal Lake, she fell in love. She could immediately picture her wedding day with this pristine lake as the backdrop.

 Ceremony Arbor

Both amateur golfers, the couple spent a great deal of time at Crystal Lake Golf Club. Once they were engaged, Crystal Lake Weddings quickly came to mind while envisioning their wedding day. Surrounded by vast lush greens, the classic white wedding tent with sunset views over Crystal Lake, was the perfect setting for their Northern Michigan wedding.  After spending their summers as a couple in Benzie County, Kendra and Andy wanted to share the beauty of this area with their closest friends and family.

Kendra&Andy_Birch_Trees

Blue and Guac colored hydrangeas were arranged on each table by Victoria’s Floral Design team. Instead of the traditional wedding cake, the couple chose wedding cupcakes from Crescent Bakery in Frankfort.  Good Harbor and Shady Lane wines were featured on the menu. Each of these well thought out details gave the event a local feel.

During cocktail hour, the couple, along with wedding party and photographers, took golf carts for a spin, to capture breathtaking photos in various areas of the course. One of our favorite photo backdrops are the white birch trees.

“ We had a very positive experience with CLGC!! Since we had to plan from ‘afar’, we really appreciated Liz ‘ helpfulness and responsiveness to our various phone calls, e-mails, etc. The venue is absolutely beautiful and very clean. The rehearsal night, as well as wedding/reception, went without a hitch. Everything was absolutely perfect!!!” Jan, Mother of the Bride

“ When I walked into the tent before getting married I was speechless, it was picture perfect! We had an absolute blast at our wedding and were truly able to enjoy ourselves without worrying about anything. Everything went so smoothly and everyone had a great time.” Kendra

The couple now resides downstate and continues to visit the lake every summer. They’ve been known to play a round of golf or two. I’ve caught Kendra over at the tent reminiscing about her wedding day, while gazing at the spectacular view. Kendra and Andy are expecting their first baby in October! A bouncing baby boy. We couldn’t be more happy for them. I can picture them bringing their new baby to the tent and explaining the love story that took place in this beautiful location.

Once Upon a Time in a Tent…

Posted on May 16, 2014 by Alysia Boynton-Fisher

I am not a romantic.  In fact, I am quite the opposite.  Growing up, I never wanted to be a princess. I wanted to be a detective and solve crimes or an attorney so I could argue with people and make them pay for their wrongdoings. I didn’t want to wear dresses and ribbons in my hair, much to my mother’s dismay.  I wanted to be one of the boys.  I could run as fast, kick as far, and climb as high.  I just couldn’t pee outside as easily!!  For us girls, it gets tricky.  I have never been a girly girl.  It wasn’t until college that I finally learned how to apply make-up.  I didn’t daydream about the kinds of things lots of girls do, like engagements, giant weddings, big white princess dresses, until everything changed, and then I did!!!!

During college I worked at a golf course in San Diego as a beverage cart girl.  I could make a mean bloody mary! I worked there for several years. After receiving my degree in public relations and marketing, I was offered a big girl job at that very golf course and became the Director of Marketing and Weddings.  I learned the in’s and out’s of wedding planning, wedding etiquette, and spent countless hours planning and setting up weddings. I helped brides envision and create their perfect day that they had been dreaming about all their lives and it was easy because we had a big blank canvas to work with, a big beautiful white tent.

Over the years while working at this golf course, I became very fond of a certain pro-shop boy.  We were friends from the start, never more, until I realized he was exactly what I was looking for.  The kind of boy you want to be with forever.  It all started with harmless flirting, a look here, a smile there, and then a dinner invitation.  Things blossomed. However, he was born and raised in Northern Michigan and was ready to return home.  After just a few fun months together, with tears in my eyes and a heavy heart,  I had to say goodbye.

Let’s just say that distance makes the heart grow fonder.  After two weeks of him being home, we decided that we just had to be together.  I can’t speak for him, but after thinking I had lost him forever, I knew that I never wanted to let him go.  We would see each other for a week and then go three months without and it was hard, so hard!!! I found myself working weddings late at night, watching the bride in her beautiful white dress, dance her first dance with the boy of her dreams, under the twinkle lights, and all of a sudden I wanted that too.

We decided that I was going to move to Traverse City. Before this born and raised San Diego girl was going to move anywhere, I had to check it out.  During our long distance adventures, I had never made it to Northern Michigan.  I had met him in St. Louis and he had come to me, but I never had been to see where he grew up.  It’s probably a good thing too.  If I would have visited for the first time in the winter, I would have turned around and caught the next plane right out of this frozen tundra.   I arrived in July and was in awe of this place that I had never even heard of.  I was in love with the boy and what was to be my new home.  It was while I was here, that the boy asked me to spend forever with him and of course I said YES.  Nothing made more sense to me than to get married at that same golf course where we met, where it all started, where I spent wedding after wedding, dreaming of me and this boy, dancing the night away, wearing a big white princess dress, in a big beautiful white tent.

It was everything I had never dreamed of! We celebrated with over three hundred of our loved ones and everything was perfect.  The food was delicious, the drinks were flowing, and we all danced the night away. It was the kind of wedding where we were begging for just one more song and then just one more song after that. The kind of wedding where you get back to your hotel and you could just pass out in your clothes, but we all know that the boy wasn’t going to let that happen!!!

Obviously,  it wouldn’t be practical to get married in the tent I was married in, way out in San Diego, but you can get married in a tent just as beautiful at Crystal Lake Golf Club.  It can be your blank canvas.  It can be anything and everything you have ever or never dreamed of.  The beginning of your story and it can begin the same as mine, Once upon a time in a tent…

Crystal Lake Wedding Coordinator: Liz Mahlich

Posted on May 9, 2014 by Liz Mahlich

Organized, dedicated, and empathetic are probably the best words to describe me. Although I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance from Michigan State University, my real passion is helping others. Whether it is sharing nutritional advice, motivating friends and family to try yoga, or coordinating a birthday party for one of my kids, I love to be helpful and creative. As a financial analyst for Michigan Department of Treasury in Lansing, I was more interested in the networking aspect of the job. I started a team building committee, coordinated fundraisers, and planned office parties. Anything to get me out of the cubicle!

In 2011, my husband was offered a promotion allowing us an opportunity to relocate to Traverse City, Michigan.  At the same time, I was able to become a stay at home mom for the first time.  After being a full time working mom,  this transition was a welcomed change. Having this opportunity in Northern Michigan, near one of the most beautiful areas in the nation, was just an added bonus. Summers are now spent camping out in Benzie County, enjoying Crystal Lake, participating in many of the local festivals, and just exploring downtown Traverse City.  We enjoy skiing in the winter and spending time in Bellaire at Shanty Creek Resort. I feel so blessed to have this special time with my kids, ages 6 and 8, who are growing so fast!

As much as I loved my new role as a Stay at Home Mom, I was craving an opportunity for a creative outlet and adult interaction.  We happened to live in the same subdivision as the Keillor Family, who managed Crystal Lake Golf Club. They were gearing up for their second wedding season, which was to be much busier than their first. Jamie Keillor was looking for an Events Coordinator to help her with all the details that go into planning each and every event.  I jumped at the opportunity to do what I was passionate about and to have a job that I truly loved each and every day.

As Crystal Lake Golf Club’s Events Coordinator, I am able to hone in on my creativity while helping brides and grooms with all the details to make their wedding day everything they had envisioned.  Before the ceremony and/or reception is even booked, I’m there to provide information about our venue and other area vendors. It’s my job to maintain strong relationships with area Caterers, DJs, Florists, Bakeries, and Hotels in order to feel confident in recommending their services to brides and grooms.  Many of our events are destination weddings, so our couples need all the information they can get about Benzie County and local vendors.  We work very hard at creating and maintaining our prefered vendors list, which is key to helping brides and grooms make informative decisions.

Once a wedding is booked, I’m there to work with the bride to help them coordinate all the details and answer any and all questions they may have to plan their wedding day.  Some brides I rarely hear from, while others I hear from weekly. A month or two before the wedding, I meet with the couple to help in anyway I can to make sure they are comfortable with the details of the event and that their details are carried out. Whether it is putting the bar list together, or giving advice on decorations, I’m happy to help in anyway I can.
The day of the event, Jamie and her staff are at the tent bright and early, making sure all tables, chairs, decorations and details are laid out. I arrive 2 hours prior to the event to prepare the bar staff and to check in with all the vendors to ensure the wedding and reception are coordinated seamlessly. As guests arrive, I make sure they have everything they need and direct them to their tables, gift table, and bar as needed. I love the special moment when the couple is announced into the reception as husband and wife to their onlooking friends and family ( I’ve been know to cry in the corner during the toasts)! It is magical to feel the love of a newly married couple and the support of their family and friends around them, sharing their special day. A beautiful and rewarding job indeed.
